China [CN] Oxytetracycline, also named oxytetracyclin or terramycin, has CAS number 79-57-2, EINECS 201-212-8, molecular formula C22H24N2O9 and molecular weight 460.43. It is a beige to pale yellow crystalline powder with a melting point of 183°C, density of 1.6340 and estimated refractive index 1.6500. Its specific optical rotation is -223° (c=1, 0.03N HCl), and approximate boiling point reaches 565.29°C. This raw material is slightly soluble in water with aqueous solubility of only 0.2 g/L (0.6 mg/mL), featuring approximate pKa values at 3.27, 7.32 and 9.11. Light-sensitive and prone to degradation, it should be preserved in dark environments under inert atmosphere at room temperature. As a classic broad-spectrum tetracycline small-molecule antibiotic, it is widely used as pharmaceutical API, veterinary antibacterial raw material, laboratory standard reagent and raw intermediate for producing Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride.
