While its exact mechanism is not fully understood, it is thought to work by modifying immune processes responsible for MS and acting as a decoy to divert an immune attack away from the protective myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells. It is administered as a daily or thrice-weekly subcutaneous injection. The most common side effects include injection site reactions (redness, pain, itching, lumps), rash, flushing, and chest pain.
