Detailed Description
Viruses are responsible for probably 30-40% cases of infectious diarrhea. Rotaviruses, members of Reoviridae family, are major etiologic agents of acute non-bacterial gastroenteritis. Rotavirus group A is the most common cause of acute and severe infectious diarrhea, a major cause of death in infants and young children. It has been estimated that more than one million rotavirus associated deaths occur annually world-wide. Human rotavirus was first detected in 1973 by examination of duodenal biopsies obtained from children with acute diarrhea. The virus breeds in the small intestine and is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. The incubation period is 1-3 days, after secretion. Symptoms for Rotavirus infections are fluid and mucous diarrhea, mostly over a short period of time. In about 65% of such cases, Rotavirus is responsible. A negative test for rotavirus is however no guarantee that viral infections are not involved because a significant number of such cases are due to Adenovirus (types 40/41). Ideally, an initial screen in such cases should be able to detect both viruses. In infants and young children, infection may result in death from dehydration caused by loss of electrolytes from the diarrhea and vomiting. Early hospitalization with fluid and electrolyte replacement eliminates the mortality. Stress situations and secondary viral or bacterial infections concurrent with Rotavirus infection could prove fatal to the individual. Given these circumstances, the need for a rapid, reproducible, sensitive and simple diagnostic test for diagnosing adenovirus and/or rotavirus infection(s) is of great importance.
