What is Milk thistle extract?

Milk thistle standardized extract is extracted from the seed of Milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Milk thistle has been used for 2,000 years as an herb to treat a variety of diseases, particularly liver, kidney and gallbladder problems. Several scientific studies have shown that substances in milk thistle, particularly a flavonoid called silymarin, protect the liver from toxins, including certain drugs like Tylenol, which can cause liver damage at high doses. Silymarin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may help the liver repair itself by growing new cells.
