Carbon structural steel: The carbon content of this kind of steel ranges from 0.05% to 0.70%, and a very few steel grade carbon content can reach 0.90%. There are generally two categoriesof carbon structural steel: common carbon structural steel and high quality carbon structural steel. Common carbon structural steel:
With relatively more impurities, this kind of steel is cheaper and generally used in less quality-demanding conditions. The carbon content is generally under 0.30%, and manganese content no more than 0.80%. Though strength of common carbon structural steel is low, its plasticity, toughness, and cold deformation is good. Usually it is used directly without heat treatment. Common carbon structural  steel is  one of the most widely used steel, mainly used for railway/bridge/construction, and for making various common components not requiring heat treatment. 
High quality carbon structural steel:
Compared to common carbon structural steel, high quality carbon structural steel contains lower content of sulfur, phosphorus and other non metallic substances. According to its carbon content and different use, this kind of steel is roughly divided into three types: ① low carbon steel with carbon content of less than 0.25%: the presentatives of this kind of steel are 08F, 08Al whose carbon content is less than 0.10%. These two types of steel have very good deep drawability and weldability; ② medium carbon steel with carbon content of 0.25~0.60%, mainly used under modulation condition and for manufacturing of equipment parts in mechine-building industry; ③ high carbong steel with carbon content of over 0.6%, mainly used for manufacturing of springs, rolls and gears.  
According to different manganese content, high quality carbon structural steel can be divided into two steel groups: steel of ordinary manganese content (0.25 ~ 0.8%) and steel of high manganese content (0.7 ~ 1% and 0.9 ~ 1.2%). Manganese can improve the hardenability of steel, strengthen the ferrite, thus improving yield strength, tensile strength and wear resistance of the steel. Usually there is an additional marker “Mn” at the end of the grades name of steel containing high content of manganese. For instance, 15Mn and 20Mn refers to carbon steel grades with irregular content of manganese.
