Pharmacological Category

Mechanism of Action

• Reduced by intracellular nitroreductase in anaerobic bacteria
• Generates active free radicals that damage DNA
• Inhibits nucleic acid synthesis → bactericidal effect
• High activity against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa

Indications

• Anaerobic infections:
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Gynecological infections
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Septicemia, skin and soft tissue infections
• Surgical prophylaxis of anaerobic infections
