Uses
Tropic acid can be used as a substrate for the esterification of carboxylic acids and alcohols, such as in a dry Dowex H⁺/NaI catalytic system.
It is one of the raw materials for the synthesis of cyclopentapeptide depsipeptide acid.
It can also be used to synthesize isocoumarin derivatives via a multicomponent photoreaction with tetracyanobenzene (TCNB). Tropical acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of drugs such as tropicamide and anisodamine.
