1. Appearance and Properties
At room temperature and pressure, it is typically a white to light yellow crystalline powder or needle-shaped crystals.
Pure products have no noticeable odor; if they contain trace impurities, they may have a slightly aromatic odor.
2. Melting Point and Solubility
Melting Point: Typical range: 88–92°C (depending on purity, high-purity products have a narrower melting point range, such as 90–91°C). Upon melting, it forms a transparent, oily liquid that recrystallizes upon cooling.
Solubility:
Readily soluble in polar organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran (solubility at room temperature can reach over 10g/100mL);
Slightly soluble in non-polar solvents such as n-hexane and petroleum ether;
Poorly soluble in water (solubility at room temperature is typically <0.1g/100mL). However, it can react with strong alkaline solutions (such as NaOH solution) to form phenolates, thereby increasing its water solubility.
