Mullein Extract Latin Name: Verbascum thapsus Linn Synonyms: Witches candle; velvet plant; candlewick; lungwort; grandmother's flannel; feltwort; flannel-leaf; hare's-beard Description: Mullein or Verbascum thapsus belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae. It is also recognized by various other common names such as witches candle, velvet plant, candlewick, lungwort, grandmother's flannel, feltwort, flannel-leaf, hare's-beard, etc. The characteristic feature of mullein plant is that its parts are covered with star-shaped trichomes and the thick cover of trichomes on the leaves gives them a silvery appearance. These plants were known by our ancestors as plants providing herbal medicines for a host of ailments. These are natives to Europe and some Asian regions and often exist as weeds in barren lands and roadsides. 19th century people smoked mullein's roots or dried flowers to treat respiratory diseases and asthma symptoms.
