Limiting the time for electric vehicles to charge before they re-launch on the road is an important factor driving their adoption, and many studies have focused on reducing these charging times. A new advance uses alternative cooling technology to take heat away from the charging cable, allowing it to handle the type of current required to charge an electric vehicle in five minutes.


The charging rate of an electric vehicle depends on the current (and other factors) the charging cable can handle, and the more current the more heat it is. Today’s solutions rely on liquid cooling systems, such as those used in computers, to prevent wires from overheating within cables, but these systems cannot scale to accommodate higher currents for fast charging without making the cables bulky and difficult to handle.


The industry does not really require electric vehicles to charge more than five minutes, but professionals believe that the current can be further increased by modifying the state of entering liquid and the design of the cooling space around the wires in the charging cable.
